EMBROIDERING MEMORIES

Commissioned by Urbane Praxis e. V. we had the opportunity to ask the community to take part into in a collective embroidery action happening on our floating art space. The fabric's botanical illustrations portrayed plants with their indigenous names, but that have historically been referenced through European perspectives that contributed to a colonial hierarchy. Our intention, through the act of embroidering and sewing collectively, was to stimulate discussions and foster social connections among participants.

During a two days workshop, we intended to create an encounter space for migrants and non-migrants, fostering an environment for exchange and interaction. Here, the postcolonial problematic becomes visible through the representation of plants and living beings incorporated into the fabric via collective embroidery. Through this analogy, our goal is to establish a platform for dialogue encompassing children, adults, families, and various urban actors. This dialogue aims to offer different perspectives on the climatic and social consequences of colonial history.
