THE FLOATING GARDEN

in(e)voking nature’s waves

Emerging from the waterways of the Landwerhkanal – Brandenburg’s forest and Neukölln’s gardens meet at the river bank. Together with their inhabitants, they will build on cultural memories surrounded by urban landscapes. The installation will unite spectators and participants. Both human and non-human will grow within the floating installation, transforming the city’s surroundings by means of pure existence.

Taking the inherent ecologies of nature, Studio Neotropico intends to decentralize cultural experiences by bringing attention to the non-human existences with whom we create biospheres of coexistence and co production. Studio Neotropico fosters engaging ways of experiencing art visually and physically – prompting dialogues encompassing fungi, vegetation, and our interrelatedness with and through different connecting tissues.

Inhabited by light, sound, and nature, the installation transforms the way we perceive the city of Berlin. The Floating Garden becomes an active component of the landscape: an ephemeral floating space framed by the urban structure and its reflections. Altering the surroundings of the Landwehrkanal as it passes through – the garden is a musical stage contemplated from the river bank – nurturing the collective memory of the living things present in the urban space.

Project sponsored by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe

This project is based on three thematic axes: water - garden - community. The Floating Garden proposes a work of art as a space of encounter. An exchange between nature and the different actors that make up this city – especially those part of the river system. Presented as a live floating installation, this project integrates different species that configure new forms of landscape and interactions on the water.
